More than a mission, Kiehl’s Does is responsibility in action. It’s what we’re doing now to generate less waste and reduce carbon emissions through the formula ingredients we use and the packaging materials we choose.

What Kiehl's does

FILLED WITH PURPOSE

We formulate our products to improve your skin’s healthy appearance and with the wellbeing of the environment in mind. 98% of our formulas are made with a renewable ingredient, which means they can be replenished or regrown. The raw ingredients we buy help impact 600 communities worldwide.

PACKED WITH RESPECT

Minimal waste packaging without unnecessary paper cartons has always been the Kiehl’s way, but now we are taking it further. In 2020 we reduced virgin plastic usage by 19.3%* by incorporating post-consumer recycled materials in our packaging. Today, over 80% of our packages contain post-consumer recycled material (while we continue to work on the other 20%).

NEW LIFE FOR OLD JARS

Through Recycle & Be Rewarded, we offer customers a meaningful way to participate by bringing their finished product packaging back to Kiehl’s. Since 2009, we’ve reclaimed over 13 million empties.

FROM BOTTLE TO LAB COAT

Every Kiehl’s Customer Representative worldwide wears a white lab coat, which is now made with fabric composed of 65% recycled consumer bottles. Many in-store fixtures are also made with upcycled materials.

BOXED FOR THE BETTER

We ship our online orders with 100% plastic-free packaging.

GIVING BACK

We believe in active generosity, and through Kiehl’s Gives, our company-wide philanthropic commitment, we’ve supported
137 charitable organizations through 213 local initiatives since 2015, with a special focus on the environment and positive social change.

TERMINOLOGY

Biodegradable:

DEFINITION

Organic products that can be biologically decomposed in an aqueous environment by microorganisms (primarily bacteria, yeast and fungi) to produce CO2 and water

PCR:

An acronym for “post-consumer recycled”; PCR can often be incorporated into bottles, cartons, jars and other packaging materials to reduce the use of virgin materials

Renewable Raw Material:

A material composed of over 50% material from a source that can be renewed or re-grown, like plants

Sustainable Sourcing:

This approach ensures that raw materials of plant origin come from supply chains that respect biodiversity, limit their environmental impact, guarantee production with zero impact on ecosystems and promote the socioeconomic development of local populations; It may also include an element of solidarity and social responsibility to benefit disadvantaged communities

Water Footprint:

A given activity’s overall impact on water, including the total amount of water used, either by the consumer or the producer (including the quantity of water that is collected and consumed and the pollution that is generated)
