What causes dark spots and hyperpigmentation?
There are two main causes of dark spots and hyperpigmentation, namely UV exposure and acne-prone skin. Essentially, skin responds to damage or inflammation by triggering an overproduction of melanin, the protein which gives skin its colour. Dark spots caused by the sun are also known as age spots. This is because they’re more common in older people due to the cumulative nature of ultraviolet exposure over the lifetime.
Dark spots and hyperpigmentation caused by sun tend to be various shades of brown and appear most commonly on areas of skin that see the most sun. For example, dark spots on the face especially the cheekbones and nose are common, as are spots on the arms and décolletage.
Dark spots caused by blemish-prone skin are also known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. These dark spots appear in places where a blemish has healed and are therefore most common in areas of acne-prone skin including the chin, jawline and T-zone. Hyperpigmentation of this kind tends to fade with time, however skincare for dark spots is formulated to help accelerate this process. Learn more about dark sport
